Smoke On The Water - World Record Attempt
Head down to the beach and join Planet Rock's Darren Redick as he joins in the fun at the Guitars on the Beach world record attempt. Heading down there too is Deep Purple frontman, Ian Gillan, who together with thousands of guitarists will try and smash the world record for the biggest band ever to play together.
Almost four thousand people have signed up to take part in 'Guitars On The Beach' on Lyme Regis Beach in Dorset on Saturday 6th September.
After learning that organisers were planning to include the Deep Purple classic ‘Smoke On The Water’ in the set of songs for the giant beach band to perform, Ian Gillan jumped on board.
The legendary singer sent them a note saying: “I hear you might be doing “Smoke” with the massed guitars and if that is the case I thought I’d offer my services if you need a singer.”
Guitars On The Beach founder Geoff Baker said: “Everybody involved is thrilled that Ian is going to lead us on a day which will make music history.
‘It’s quite something to write home about, that you once played with Ian Gillan in a band with thousands of guitarists.
“Smoke On The Water was recently voted the greatest guitar riff ever written, it is universally popular and it is anybody’s guess how many will join the band on the day.”
Alongside smashing a world record, the event is aiming to raise money for Lyme and West Country charities.
