Phil Lynott statue damaged

Two men arrested.

The statue, which stood in Dublin city centre, was knocked over and badly damaged in the early hours of Friday morning. Just hours after the appeal for witnesses was released, two men in their 20s came forward. Handing themselves in at a Dublin police station, the pair were promptly arrested.

Both have since been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Irish Director of Public Prosecutions.

The statue, which has been removed for repairs, was unveiled in 2005 by Lynott's mother, Philomena. Her son died from heart failure in January 1986 after a long battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

The 25th anniversary of Lynott's death was marked by a major exhibition of his life and career in Dublin.
