The tenth band taking the spotlight in our weekly Ones To Watch feature are wide-ranging Peterborough rockers Austin Gold.
Austin Gold are David James Smith (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Cable (guitars), Chris Ogden (drums), Russell Hill (keyboards) and Lee Churchill (bass).
Since their inception four years ago, Austin Gold have been building up a reputation as one of the finest rising live bands on the circuit. Their refreshingly self-assured Facebook biography says it all: ‘See Austin Gold live. That is all the description you will need.’ In fact, the confidence seems to be paying off with their ever-expanding fan base dubbing themselves The Gold Crew.
Taking their name from a 1960s drum pedal, the quintet cite an array of music legends as influences for their eclectic sounds including Pink Floyd, John Mayer, Foo Fighters, Gary Moore, ZZ Top and Led Zeppelin.
After recording a 5 track EP in the summer of 2014, the band recently penned a deal with the Jigsaw Label who released their debut album Before Dark Clouds. The album, as with all the label’s releases, was tracked to analogue tape. Armed with ten original songs and with near-telepathic communication, the band laid down the tightest of rock-solid tracks.
Their melting pot of influences come together to create something that is really very special. From heavy guitar riffs, to the most delicate heart-felt ballads, from atmospheric sonic landscapes, to hook-driven melodies, this is an album that deserves to be heard.
