Iron Maiden open The Legacy of the Beast World Tour with rarity packed setlist

Iron Maiden kicked off the European leg of the Legacy of the Beast World Tour in fine style in Tallinn tonight (Saturday 26th May).

The first of 38 European shows that continue through to the UK in July and August saw the heavy metal legends perform a setlist packed with rarities in front of a 10,500-capacity crowd at Saku Suurhall in the Estonian capital.

Before the show, Bruce Dickinson promised “one or two things (in the setlist) that people are gonna be really surprised by” and “there’ll be social media madness after the first show”, and he was more than true to his word.

Opening with ‘Aces High’, which hadn’t been played since 2014, the band gave ‘Piece of Mind’ track 'Where Eagles Dare' its first outing in 13 years before playing setlist stalwart ‘2 Minutes To Midnight’.

Having unveiled the Clansman incarnation of Eddie the Head for the Legacy of the Beast mobile game earlier this month, the Blaze Bayley era classic ‘The Clansman’ was duly given its first performance since 2003 four songs in.

Following ‘The Trooper’ and ‘Revelations’, Iron Maiden hit fans with a quadruple of songs that hadn't been played for four years or more – ‘For the Greater Good of God’, ‘The ‘Wicker Man’, the Blaze Bayley era ‘Sign of the Cross’ (its first performance in 18 years) and surprisingly the first outing of ‘Flight of Icarus’ in 32 years.

Dispatching ‘Fear of the Dark’, ‘Iron Maiden’ and ‘The Number of the Beast’, Iron Maiden returned for the encore by playing ‘The Evil That Men Do’ for the first time since the Maiden England World Tour, which was followed by ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ and set closer ‘Run to the Hills’.

The Legacy Of The Beast World Tour is inspired by Iron Maiden’s comic book and mobile phone game of the same name, and, in keeping with this, the stage set design features a number of different but interlocking ‘worlds’.

When the tour was announced last November, it was confirmed that the setlist will be dominated by classic Iron Maiden material from the 1980s with a handful of tracks from later albums added into the mix.
