Two years after they were forced to cancel at the eleventh hour, Foo Fighters have been confirmed as the blockbuster headliners of Glastonbury 2017.
Topping the bill on Saturday 24th June, the rock giants join previously announced Friday night headliners Radiohead at the Worthy Farm event this June.
The news was confirmed shortly before Foo Fighters played a gig at the 500 capacity Cheese and Grain in Frome just 15 miles from the Glastonbury site in Pilton.
Glasto organiser Emily Eavis is a patron of the venue and the band were introduced at the show by founder Michael Eavis.
The official Glastonbury Twitter announcement:
Foo Fighters have been in the UK since Wednesday when Dave Grohl attended the official Sony Music afterparty following The BRIT Awards.
The band were lined up to headline the Glastonbury in 2015 but pulled out when Dave broke his leg in on stage fall in Sweden just two weeks beforehand.
Ever since the cancellation they’ve been bookmakers’ favourites to honour their Pyramid Stage slot but last year surprisingly didn’t feature with Muse, Adele and Coldplay headlining instead.
Teasing their fans ahead of tonight’s announcement, select people on the Foos mailing list have been receiving spoof airline boarding passes from the fictitious Obelisk Airlines, which has a Pyramid as its logo. The accompanying envelope also had the Foo Fighters’ logo within a Pyramid.
Pointing towards some big news, the boarding pass came with the check-in time of 6pm on Tuesday 21st February and featured Dave Grohl’s signature.
Despite nothing happening at the teased time, the band then launched their Obelisk Airlines website counting down to “in-flight entertainment to begin at 7.45pm on Friday evening” – the Cheese and Grain gig.
Back in November, the band also launched the Foo Fighters passport website, which features an image of Europe from space along with a passport emblazoned with the Foos logo. As soon as they announced a European festival show, a new stamp appears within the passport and the location of the event is illuminated in red on the background map.
