Rick Wakeman

Originally trained as a classical pianist, Rick was also a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards and by his late teens he was an already established session musician and a member of the folk-rock band The Strawbs.  Between 1969 and 1972, the name 'Rick Wakeman' began appearing on the credits of albums including a who's who of influential music legends such as David Bowie, Cat Stevens, T.Rex, Elton John, Lou Reed and Black Sabbath.

By the summer of 1971, Wakeman joined YES, one of the founders of progressive rock music. Whilst with Yes, he started releasing solo material including albums The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

He left Yes at the end of 1973 (although it has since re-formed) and went on to write scores for several musicals, as well as stage a huge concert on ice - The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and The Knights of the Round Table. He also performs with his son Adam and has released a number of albums with him as Wakeman and Wakeman.

Rick joined Planet Rock in September 2005 and presents Rick's Place every Saturday from 10am-1pm.
