The Greatest Album Art Of All Time

In this world of digital music, album art is in danger of becoming extinct.

It wasn't that long ago that buying a record was about buying the whole package - from the disc itself to the meticulously created artwork. It all added up to a complete work of art that made the music almost tactile, and it's something that is gradually and tragically disappearing from the world.

In this list we celebrate the list of the greatest 40 pieces of album art - from the ridiculous to the sublime - and pay tribute to the albums that are as visually iconic as they are musically.

We're guessing that you may have different opinions as to what should have made the cut. Let us know which album covers you would have included in the form below.
40. Metallica - Metallica (The Black Album) (1991)
It's either brilliant or ridiculous. The Gadsden flag snake on the right hand side is a reference to the ‘Don't Tread On Me' slogan that Metallica utilised on the song of the same name and there's a Metallica logo on the left. Not much else. The band were not oblivious to the Spinal Tap “how much blacker could this be” Smell The Glove comparisons and in their 1992 documentary A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica the two bands met and discussed the similarities between album covers.
