Buyers Guide: Black Sabbath

As the members of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin have also found, there are downsides to making the records that found a genre. Wherever their subsequent careers have taken them, they, and the members of Black Sabbath, have remained to varying degrees in the shadow of their past.

From September 1970 to November 1973, Sabbath cut five records that became pillars of heavy metal; they created a sound so influential that elements of it can be heard everywhere from Metallica to My Chemical Romance to Muse. Such ubiquity means that much of their subsequent work is judged by almost implausibly high standards.

That Sabbath have weathered both storms and doldrums in the subsequent thirty-odd years and are now looking set for one last hurrah with Ozzy back behind the mic, bringing their story full circle.

We've put together a carefully chosen list of records that you might want to investigate if you're a Sabbath novice.
