Police - Message In A Bottle

4. VAN HALEN - A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRUTH

Despite the band's propensity for self-destruction, and despite the fact that they did ZERO promotion of the album outside of the US, Van Halen defied all the odds and produced a, frankly, magnificent new album.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRUTH is the band's first full album with Dave Lee Roth since 1984 but it could just as easily have been released in 1985. The simple explanation for this is that the majority of the songs are based around unreleased demos and sketches of songs that the band had in their vaults. The result is a thrillingly familiar but altogether new experience with a set of brand new songs. It was like you had dug out your copy of Women And Children First and found a whole extra disc in there that you had never heard before.

This is an album that barely takes a moment to breath as it fires through 13 tracks in just a little less than 50 minutes. Lead single and album opener 'Tattoo' is something of a curveball and perhaps the worst track on the album which you will probably skip straight over in order to get to the good stuff.

'Bullethead' and the awesome 'China Town' really stand out as hard-as-nails rockers akin to the band at their absolute peak. Swaggering behemoths of rock songs that get into your head and refuse to get out, just like those classic Van Halen songs of old.

Wisely, the band decided against trying something new here (i.e "doing something dubstep" or hiring Will.I.Am as a producer, or whatever bands do these days to try to stay "fashionable") and instead focused on what they do best - four minute, upbeat, hard rock, with a catchy hook and guitar playing which will set your speakers on fire.
