HELP: PROBLEMS LISTENING ONLINE

If you are having problems trying to listen to Planet Rock online and the radio player is freezing onscreen or not launching, the most common problem is either a temporary glitch or if it persists, your computer might not have the right software installed. Here are a few suggestions to help:

Our media player is a WINDOWS media Player, therefore you will need to install Windows Media software to launch the listen live/listen again/ video player.

Below is a list of the supporting software that may be relevant to you and the links to the download the software and install so you can listen. All the software required is completely free

WINDOWS USERS

Software the Player should support:

Windows 95 or higher
Windows XP users note: Planet Rock must be listed as a "trusted site" for streaming to work.

Windows Browser Suggestion:

Browser Plug-in: Windows Media Player 7.
Note: version 7 is not compatible with Windows '95

You will not be able to view the player controls if you are using a firefox browser with OS Windows.

Apologies for the inconvenience - you are not alone and we are working on better players to help in the near future.

MAC & LINUX USERS

LISTEN AGAIN:
Please note, Mac users are NOT currently able to use our LISTEN AGAIN service. We are looking into this. However, if there is a show you would like to listen again to, please contact webmaster@planetrock.com with the show you wish to listen again to (and the time and date the show was broadcast) and we will try and help you.

LISTEN LIVE:

Our media player is a WINDOWS Media Player, therefore you will need to install Windows Media software to launch the LISTEN LIVE to our ON-AIR stream.

Below are two screen shots of what will pop-up when you try to launch the radio player if you have a Mac and Windows Media Player (WMP) software has not been installed. Until you have installed WMP software you will keep receiving these pop-ups and will not be able to LISTEN LIVE.

Using a Mac Safari web browser can often prohibit access but using a Firefox web browser might work. Give it a try.

Software the Player should support:

Mac OS 9 or OS X
Mac users note: Planet Rock is only available as a "low" quality stream at present, though we are planning to offer better quality very soon.

Browser: Internet Explorer version 4, 5 or 6.
Note: versions 3 and below are not compatible.

The hardware you need:

A computer that meets the minimum requirements to playback stations. This minimum specification refers to the 'power' of the computer, as well as having an installed and working, modem or other internet connection, soundcard and speakers. We recommend the following as a minimum specification:- 166MHz processor or higher 16-bit soundcard Speakers (connected) 28.8kbps modem or better. (We suggest 56.6 kbps or hi-bandwidth connection for best results).

Do we offer other streaming formats?
At present, no.  This is because we have to encode all of our streamed content for every format and every quality level, and it's a lot of work.  We have opted to offer streams that the majority of users will be able to enjoy, though we are constantly reviewing this situation.

Problems with Norton Personal Firewall and Online Streaming

Our player is launched in a pop up window, which some computer software will block thinking it is a pop-up ad or cookie. For example, the new version of Internet Explorer (IE7) blocks any pop-ups as standard, therefore……

You may need to disable your pop-up blocker function on your computer settings if the player is not launching or is frozen on your screen or simply allow the function. Software like Firewall or Firefox are common pop-up blocker programmes.

To allow the player to function correctly, follow the steps below to exempt the correct domain from Ad Blocking, delete all of your temporary files, and then restart your computer.

To exempt Online Streaming from Ad Blocking filters (eg Norton Internet Security)

For 2004 products:

1. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.

2. Click Ad Blocking > Configure > Advanced > Add Site.

3. Type www.planetrock.com , click OK.

4. Select the newly created www.planetrock.com entry. In the right pane, on the Ad Blocking tab, click Add.

5. Select Permit.

6. Type a single / into the dialog box, Click OK.

7. Click OK to close any open windows.

For 2003 products:

1. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.

2. Click Options.

3. On the Web Contents tab, click Add Site.

4. Type www.planetrock.com , click OK.

5. Select the newly created www.planetrock.com entry. In the right pane, on the Ad Blocking tab, click Add.

6. Select Permit.

7. Type a single / into the dialog box, Click OK.

8. Click OK to close any open windows.

  • Worth noting: GOOGLE toolbars
also have a built in pop-up blocker and even having carried out the above, you may find no change as the google toolbar is still actively preventing the player pop-up - therefore you will need to disabled this as above.

Delete Temporary Files:
Sometimes having a spring clean and deleting all your temporary files can help too....

To delete all temporary files:

  • Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
  • Click anywhere in the Address window to select it. (If you do not see the Address window, then right-click the blank area to the right of Help. On the menu that appears, click Address bar.)
  • Type the following, and then press Enter: %temp%
  • The temporary folder for the currently logged-on user is displayed.
  • In most cases, you can safely delete the contents. If you are not sure, then copy any files or folders to a different location. To delete the contents, click the Edit menu > Select All. Press the Delete key. Click Yes if prompted to confirm.
  • You must now restart your computer.

If you are using Office Computers

Some offices / businesses etc...block their staff from being able to use certain mechanics (like online players) within the business. Obviously there is nothing we can do about this but this is why you may find that your laptop or PC will launch the player elsewhere but not at work.
